From 23/03/2024, the Australian Department of Immigration will no longer require a GTE Statement for the subclass 500 visa. Instead, a new test, GS – Genuine Student, will be applied.

For applicants who have applied for the subclass 500 visa before 23/03/2024, the old rules will still apply, meaning that they will still need to submit a GTE.

The new GS criteria focus on assessing the genuine intentions of the student, considering the following factors:

        • Details of family/economic circumstances, educational background, work experience
        • Explain the choice of course in Australia and the benefits of studying this program
        • International students who have studied in
        •  Australia must provide details of previous study
For applicants who are in Australia but do not hold a student visa, they must explain why they want to switch to a student visa
        • Other information that the applicant wishes to add.
